Scrap Tire Collection September 10

The Scrap Tire Collection will be Friday September 10, 2010 from 10 AM to 3, at the Thayer County Road Department Storage Lot, just west of the Rodeo grounds. This collection is free of charge for Thayer County residents. Please no rims, tubes or commercial operations or dealers. This event is sponsored by the Thayer County Commissioners and Economic Development, Little Blue NRD, and Trailblazer R C & D. The collection is funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality.

Deshler, population 892, is in the heart of farming country with cattle, grain sorghum and wheat being the major crops. There are over 700 farms in Thayer County with an average size of 510 acres. Approximately 31 percent of the farmland is irrigated.

Deshler is located on Highway 136 in the southern part of Thayer County in south-central Nebraska, 12 miles from the Kansas State Line. U.S. Highway 81 is eight miles to the east, and Interstate 80 is 55 miles north of the community. The State Capital, Lincoln, is 100 miles northeast of Deshler. Hebron Municipal Airport, with a 3,600-foot paved runway, is six miles northeast of Deshler.

The Deshler area is very popular for hunting pheasant, quail, deer and other small game. Excellent cathfish and other panfish can be caught from the nearby Little Blue River.
